General Trip Description:

This exciting adventure has been designed with the intent to get you deep into the Amazon region of Ecuador in South America. Days in the deepest Amazon part of the trip will be focused around searching for wildlife, natural history and cultural exchange with an indigenous tribe of this region. You will also get to explore the cloudforest of Ecuador with it’s huge ferns, prolific birdlife and great hiking. You will see areas that most other travelers do not experience. Days will be full and active. Flexibility and an open mind are required for this type of adventure. You are guaranteed to come home filled with a whirlwind of incredible memories from this South American adventure!

  • Visit a cloud forest preserve on the West side of the Andes. Hike trails with a naturalist through a forest hanging with mosses, bromeliads and epiphytic orchids. This protected area is in the Choco region where the birdlife is very diverse and the Spectacled Bear is making a comeback.
  • Expeditionary style trip into remote rainforest with some of the highest biodiversity on the planet.
  • Travel in wooden dugout canoes paddled silently through primary forest.
  • Learn from and interact with local indigenous guides whose knowledge of the forest is legendary.
  • Fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle while camping along pristine river beaches.
  • Includes a spectacular flight over the Andes.

You will be traveling with local indigenous guides who live in small communities along the river. Their lives are intertwined with the forest and their depth of knowledge and connection to it is astounding. They live a subsistence lifestyle based on hunting and gathering and are also an enterprising and intelligent people who realize that tourism can be an alternative to resource exploitation and may help preserve the forest they depend on. They are interested in other cultures, particularly when there is a relationship set up in terms of exchange rather than one observing the other. Being culturally sensitive and open to other ways of seeing things is imperative for a positive interaction and often leads to insights that are an unexpected bonus for participants.

"Deep Amazon" Itinerary

Day 1... The adventure begins! Fly to Quito (9,200 feet) and transfer to accommodations with Untamed Path driver.

Day 2... Departure from Quito to the cloud forest (2-hours by vehicle). Time for a short hike on your own upon arrival. Lunch at the lodge then join a group of others staying at the lodge for an informative natural history orientation hike with an English speaking guide.

Day 3... Early morning birding walk, breakfast at the lodge then hit the trails for the day on your own with a bag lunch. Return to Quito in the late afternoon to get ready for the next section of the trip.

Day 4... 35-minute flight over the Andes and into the Amazon Basin. On a clear day the views of snow covered volcanoes meeting the rainforest in the remote and inaccessible eastern escarpment are spectacular. Upon arrival you will be met by a new region specific guide (English speaking) who will be with you during this deep rainforest section and hop in a bus for the journey of several hours to a remote indigenous village. At the river get acquainted with your local guides and have lunch before heading downstream by dugout motor canoe on the river. En-route you will have the opportunity to see many different rainforest birds including parrots and toucans and possibly see other wildlife such as monkeys. After 2-3 hours arrive at the lodge where you will receive an orientation to the next few days in the rainforest then a well-deserved dinner after a full day of travel! Welcome to Amazonia!

Day 5... Navigate the river downstream to its confluence with another nearby river and follow it until you arrive at a small indigenous village tucked deep in the rainforest. The people of this small remote village struggle to hold onto their traditional way of life while protecting their forest from the pressures of oil exploration and illegal logging. Tourism is an alternative economy for them, which helps tremendously. It takes at least seven hours to get there by dugout motor canoe (great wildlife viewing opportunities along the way). Set up camp nearby along the river.

Day 6-9... Spend the days exploring the surrounding rainforest with your local guides. Traveling further downstream to camp along the river provides ample opportunities to view wildlife, hike to hidden waterfalls and learn from your native hosts.

Day 10... Eventually work your way back upstream to the lodge where you stayed on night 4.

Day 11... Early morning hike then travel back to civilization where a hot shower and comfy bed awaits. Spend the night in a rainforest frontier town.

Day 12... Fly from the rainforest back to Quito in the morning and then explore Quito on your own in the afternoon.

Day 13... Transfer to airport for the long journey home.
